New Steps Towards Trilateral Talks: Is Peace on the Way?

New meetings between representatives of the United States, Russia, and Ukraine promise a shift in efforts to end the four-year war. But will they reach an agreement this time?

In the latest developments in the Ukraine crisis, Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky separately met with senior American representatives. These meetings are aimed at exploring possible ways to end the war that began with Russia's military invasion of Ukraine in ۲۰۲۲.

New Proposals and Concerns Over Continued War

Steve Vitkoff, the U.S. special representative, announced that significant progress has been made in these meetings and that trilateral negotiations are also on the agenda. It is reported that two American representatives, Vitkoff and Jared Kushner, presented new and more effective proposals to end the war during their recent trip to Kyiv. However, Zelensky has warned that the possibility of continued hostilities exists in the winter season.

The Kremlin has not officially rejected trilateral talks with the U.S. and Ukraine, but a spokesperson for the entity emphasized that it is still too early to determine the date and location of the negotiations. On the other hand, Zelensky reported that his negotiating team is coordinating with European officials, but did not provide further details about these arrangements.

Challenges Ahead for Negotiations

Previous negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv, held under U.S. supervision in Geneva, did not yield results due to deep disagreements over territorial issues. While diplomatic efforts have decreased in recent months due to the U.S. government's focus on the war with Iran, the war in Ukraine continues to leave many casualties and displace millions.

Despite ongoing attacks on Ukraine, the country has also increased its retaliatory strikes against Russia in recent months to exert more pressure on Moscow and bring it to the negotiating table. Disputes over the Donbas region, which Russia does not fully control, remain the main obstacle to peace negotiations.
