Bangladesh, a ۱۷۰ million population country in South Asia, is facing a severe measles crisis this year that has claimed the lives of over ۱,۰۰۰ children and recorded ۱۸,۴۸۴ cases of infection. This situation is considered the deadliest measles outbreak in recent decades and has raised widespread concerns among health officials and families.
Vaccination Challenges and Lack of Herd Immunity
Measles is highly contagious and spreads through coughing and sneezing. Unfortunately, there is no specific treatment for it, and complications from the disease can include encephalitis and severe respiratory issues. While health officials in Bangladesh have launched a large vaccination campaign, statistics show that about ۴ million children have missed out on this program. A spokesperson for the National Health Services Department pointed to the lack of herd immunity, stating, "We have not been able to achieve herd immunity."
Despite vaccinating over ۱۸ million children, there are still vulnerable pockets that have contributed to the spread of this disease. Health officials emphasize that controlling the measles crisis requires more than just vaccination and must also address chronic malnutrition among children.
Dengue Crisis and Pressure on the Healthcare System
Alongside this crisis, Bangladesh's healthcare system is also facing an increase in dengue cases. Reports indicate that hospitals, which were prepared for ۵۰ dengue patients, are now struggling with ۵۰۰ patients. Just on Tuesday, ۹ people died from dengue, and ۱,۵۷۱ patients were admitted to hospitals. Since the beginning of this year, Bangladesh has recorded ۴۵,۴۷۵ dengue cases and ۱۳۰ related deaths.
The young health minister has warned that dengue cases may rise in the coming weeks and emphasized that "if we take measures to keep our environment clean, we may see a decrease in dengue outbreaks." Otherwise, dengue could turn into a serious crisis in the last week of September and early October.
The Prime Minister of Bangladesh is also set to launch a three-month anti-dengue campaign on Saturday to help reduce the spread of this disease.
