In his first keynote speech since taking office as Chancellor in July, UK Chancellor, Hunt, emphasized financial discipline as his "top priority." This speech came as the country moves towards a new budget on October ۲۸.
Agreement on Financial Rules
Hunt, who was recently appointed, stated that "the Prime Minister and I are aligned in our commitment to adhere to financial rules in the upcoming budget." In his speech at a manufacturing center in Coventry, he discussed the necessity of maintaining a balance between everyday spending and government tax revenues, without mentioning the issue of tax increases to reduce the UK's debt.
Economic Challenges and Weak Growth
Meanwhile, Hunt stressed the need to change the country's "weak" economic growth trajectory, saying: "This is essential. It may be the central aim of my role as Chancellor." While he was delivering this speech, British luxury car manufacturer, Jaguar Land Rover, announced plans to cut ۴,۰۰۰ jobs over the next two years.
Hunt also referred to the challenge of youth unemployment, deeming it a "moral duty" that must be addressed. He added that attention should be paid to the high cost of living affecting millions of Britons, especially with rising energy prices due to the US-Iran war.
Rising inflation has pushed government bond yields to their highest levels in decades, and consumers and borrowers are expected to soon face increased interest rates from central banks. Alongside Hunt's speech, the UK government announced plans to reduce bureaucracy and allocate £۱۵۰ million ($۲۰۰ million) to boost business innovation in Northern England.
These measures align with the new Prime Minister, Burnham's, goal of devolving economic and political power to regions outside London. Since Burnham's entry into government, he has offered some low-cost incentives to the British people and reduced taxes on bus tickets and electricity bills.
However, critics believe that financial constraints will prevent Burnham and Hunt from achieving larger commitments, including increasing public control over public services, ending homelessness, and bridging the significant gap in the defense budget. Hunt had previously resigned as Defense Minister in the last government and criticized the Treasury for insufficient funding.
