Vandalistic attacks against symbols of solidarity and memorials in Germany have recently taken on a new hue. The maple tree, planted in memory of the victims of a terrorist attack on the Pride march in Berlin, was horrifically uprooted. This tree was planted in Tiergarten Park last August and has now become a symbol of pain and suffering.
A Deadly Attack and a Tragic Memorial
The attack that occurred in July during the Pride march resulted in the death of a ۶۵-year-old Polish woman and injuries to about ۳۰ others. The Berlin police confirmed this news, stating that the memorial tree was completely uprooted and part of the rainbow-colored bench next to it was also violently destroyed. This is not the first time symbols belonging to the LGBTQ+ community in Germany have been targeted by vandalistic attacks.
Reactions from the Community and Officials
Verena Graf, the head of the Greens group in the Berlin parliament, assured the LGBTQ+ community that they are not alone, stating: "We will replant this tree - every time it is necessary." The Mitte district council has also promised to replace the destroyed bench, viewing this act as a symbol of freedom and solidarity with the queer community.
Stephanie Remlinger, the mayor of the Mitte district, emphasized: "Those who did this want to make a statement against these values. Our fundamental values are non-negotiable." These reactions come as terrorist attacks against minority communities in Germany have become a social dilemma.
The attack on the Pride march, one of the largest LGBTQ events in Europe, was carried out by a ۲۱-year-old man affiliated with the terrorist group ISIS. This individual was killed by the police after fleeing. This attack is just one of several that have shaken Germany in recent years, reminding us that there is still a long way to go to achieve true solidarity in society.
